When it becomes the first protected area in a French city by the Malraux law in 1964, the Old town Lyon was in a poor abandoned state. Its status of a protected sector required a particular renovation approach regarding the houses. By means of this large-scale project, the area has become nowadays the patrimonial gem of Lyon. The visitors have access to the magnificent courtyards and picturesque alleys through the legal agreements, signed by the estates’ owners. There are more than 200 merchant houses, some of them being over 500 years old.
Our guides will lead you to the discovery of the mythical passageways of the Old town of Lyon where you could “trabouler” (from trans ambulare in lat.) meaning “the action of crossing”). Reaching the backyards of the houses, or crossing from one street to another, the traboules are open for a visit, being part of a particular accessibility program. Through the eye of an architecture expert, you could figure out this maze and understand the uniqueness of this part of a city listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

An exceptional heritage in the heart of an important European metropolis, Old Lyon gives you the opportunity to escape from the present and go back in time to the age of the Renaissance fairs. A period when merchants, bankers and publishers from all over the Europe
were rushing between Rhône and Saône : with its four annual fairs, Lyon knew a flourishing 16th century through its the silk and spice trades. A gateway to Italy, core of the military and financial authority, the town became logistic crossroad on the intersection of rivers and roads. The Old town of Lyon is the most genuine token of this golden age.
